136/365 June 2010: Chickens Everywhere

I think that if I hadn’t lived in S.E. Asia, I wouldn’t understand the challenge of containing bird flu.  In most countries in S.E. Asia, chickens roam free everywhere. They are such a common part of the landscape that you almost don’t notice them.  Despite the dangers to the chickens, it is a much better life than those had in the horrible chicken farms in the developed nations where birds have their beaks cut off, and live their lives stacked in cages and are not slaughtered mercifully.  Eventually, for so many reasons, I will be a vegetarian.
